The Metallising Process

Metallising is the general name for the technique of coating metal on the surface of non-metallic objects. Because a non-metallic object tends to be a poor electrical conductor, the object's surface must be made conductive before plating can be performed.

Techniques for metallization started as early as miror making. In 1835, Justus von Liebig discovered the process of coating a glass surface with metallic silver, making the glass mirror one of the earliest items being metallized. Plating other non-metallic objects grew rapidly with introduction of ABS plastic.

Our factory specialises in Vacuum metallising, which involves heating the coating metal to its boiling point in a vacuum chamber, then letting condensation deposit the metal on the substrate's surface. This applies a thin film to the surface via thin-film deposition. "Thin" is a relative term, but our techniques control layer thickness within a few tenths of a nanometre, allowing our coating to suit your specific requirements.

Our skilled technicians place the tooling fixtures containing your parts into the carousels and move them into the vacuum chamber. The vacuum level is set and a current is sent to the evaporation source, starting the vaporisation process. Once hot enough, the metal source forms a vapor bond-mist which is evenly applied and bonds to your parts. The carousels rotate to allow all the parts inside to be coated uniformly.

Upon completion, the chamber is returned to atmospheric pressure and the tooling fixtures are unloaded .
All finished coats are inspected for flaws, to make sure that it meets our expected standards and ensuring you get a high quality result every time.
